Grace and Truth

Colossians 1:6 “Of this you have heard before in the word of truth: the gospel which has come to you as indeed in the whole world, it is bearing fruit and increasing – as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in Truth.”

The Gospel bears fruit and increases in our lives when Holy Spirit reveals to us the grace of God in truth. Grace and truth are both gifts that flow from the love of God. One depicts a loving Father showing us the way, and the other, a loving Father putting us on His shoulders and carrying us on the way. Without truth we do not know where we’re going, and without grace, although we know the way, we cannot walk in it.

Truth is a person and He came to reconcile us to The Father, through His blood, because He loves us. We are no longer sinners but sons of Light, in The Light – Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:5) The grace of God is given to us in relationship with Holy Spirit. It transforms us and empowers us to walk and live like sons. It molds us into the image of God, to become love, because we were created in His image and the image of God is Love.

Romans 6:1 “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may abound?”

Grace and Truth were never meant to be separated. They work together through Holy Spirit in sanctification. When we try to separate them, we end up with perverted versions of both – as we see in the verse above – that are neither grace nor truth. When we try and separate grace from truth, we get a perverted version of grace, which mistakes the mercy of God for the grace of God, and produces apathy towards sin, no desire for repentance and eventually a seared conscience.

When we try and separate truth from grace, we get the old covenant of the Law. (Romans 7:9-11) We end up trying to fulfill the law in our own strength and ability and the enemy uses this to produce pride in us when we’ve done right, condemnation when we’ve done wrong, and eventually hopelessness, and a hardened angry heart towards God, the gospel, and the church. When truth and grace are separated, we can’t find the sanctification that only comes through a love relationship.

Truth is not just God’s word or commandment, but His commandment is His nature and His heart. Grace is a gift given to His children through a love relationship that empowers His children to manifest His image in the world. Both of these flow from the love of God. They are meant to be given to us in a love relationship with Him.

Romans 6:13 “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and offer every part of yourself as an instrument of righteousness.”

Righteousness is a gift of right standing with God through the blood of Jesus. When we start everyday from the place that we’ve been made righteous, and offer ourselves to The Lord as children of God through the blood of Jesus, then Holy Spirit begins the work of sanctification through the grace of God and empowers us to live like children of God.

Receive the gift of the Love of God today. Fall into a love relationship with Him and you will never be the same.
